‘Everything is gone’: Walthall County devastated by tornadoes

WALTHALL COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Neighbors in Walthall County are starting to clean up the damage left by Saturday’s two tornadoes. Many are now without homes, and families are grieving for those who were killed in the storms.

Crews surveyed the damage on Sunday, and they’re expecting up to 100 homes and businesses to be destroyed or damaged.

Neighbors in Salem and Darbun said the two back-to-back storms were nothing short of horrifying.

“We got on top of the kids, had pillows on top of all of us. And we were frightened. We thought that the house was about to just fall apart, come up off of us, noise everywhere. We didn’t know what was fixing to happen,” said Kayla Lambert, whose home was damaged.

Curtis Ratliff spent Sunday trying to salvage what he could after losing his family home.

“There’s so much going through my head. A lot of hard work put in, and I hate to see it all gone. It hurts. It really does. It’s sad. Everything, all my kids’ stuff, everything is gone,” he said.

Bethlehem Loop Road in Darbun is one of the hardest hit areas. Homes were left unrecognizable, dozens of trees were uprooted and debris was scattered for miles. The road is the area where two adults and a child were killed.

“Unfortunately, we lost a loved one, the 7-year-old. He was a good kid, a great church-going kid. Just keep the family and our community and surrounding areas that have families and friends that was affected in this storm in your prayers, because they’re going to need it,” said Carla Andrews, who lives in the area.

Despite the horrific devastation, residents remain grateful that more lives were not lost.

“I’m just thankful that we’re all safe and most of our neighbors. I mean, we lost three, but we’re all praying for them,” said Bonnie Lambert, a neighbor.

Those impacted said times are tough now, but they’re determined to rebuild step-by-step.

“Only through God’s grace we recover. When He says, ‘Look up to the hills, which cometh thy help,’ and at the end of the day, the help comes from Him. Regardless of what we try to patch up or whatever, still through God’s grace, we are blessed,” said Andrews.

Emergency management officials said it will take several days to survey all of the damage. They’re asking people to stay off of the roadways after dark.
