Walthall County’s recovery slow six months post-tornadoes

WALTHALL COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Six months after two powerful tornadoes tore through Walthall County, the recovery process is far from over.

Debris has been cleared from roadsides, but damage to infrastructure remains a major issue. Officials said more than 30 county roads were damaged. The county is still waiting on FEMA reimbursement for cleanup costs.

“FEMA projects our damage at $8.4 million for debris, pickup damage to county roads. We had probably 30 county roads that were damaged throughout our county in District 4. The northern part of the county was hit the worst. They have 20-something roads that were affected by the storm, and we’re working with FEMA now to try to recover some of that money to repair those roads,” said Walthall County Supervisor Roger Ginn, District 1.

Some residents said they’ve received little to no aid after losing their homes in March.

“We got denied three times, and then it was because we had insurance. It didn’t matter how little or much you got, it was just that you had it. It was just an insurance payout, so we got denied,” said Lee and Chasity Anglin, who lost their home during the storm.

Despite the challenges, county leaders said nearly $9 million in federal assistance has been distributed to residents. The funds are mostly being used for housing and rental needs.

For those who need FEMA assistance, they will be stationed at the Armory in Tylertown.
