According to Chicago police, the incident unfolded just after 8 p.m. in the 400 block of North Columbus Drive.
Officers said the victim, a 46-year-old woman, was walking along the sidewalk in the area when she heard gunshots and felt pain, she then realized she had suffered a gunshot wound to her arm.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was listed in good condition.
The victim was a woman who was visiting the city from Connecticut and was with her young son when she was hit near an AMC Theater. The child was not injured in the incident.
A search is now underway for the people responsible and on Thursday, Chicago police shared photos, which appeared to have been captured by CTA security cameras, of four people who officers believe may have been involved in the incident.
According to police, the four individuals are believed to all be under 20 years old, with varying heights and weights.
It is unclear if the clothes the individuals were spotted wearing in the photos were the same clothes worn during the alleged incident.
Police advise the public to remain aware of their surroundings and stay free from distractions. According to officers, anyone who is confronted by an assailant should try to remain calm.
Authorities warn the public never to pursue a fleeing assailant and instead work to remember any unique physical characteristics of the offenders.
Police say those who fall victim or witness a crime should call 911 immediately and provide authorities with a detailed description of the offenders.
