Former Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers dies at 78

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Former Winnebago County Sheriff Richard “Dick” Meyers has died at 78.

Meyers served as Sheriff for 17 of his 47-year law enforcement career that began on September 16th, 1967. He retired on November 30th, 2014, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

“Throughout his career, Sheriff Meyers set a high standard for law enforcement, always leading with courage and compassion. His leadership and dedication to keeping our county safe will never be forgotten. As a mentor to many his contributions have shaped the foundation of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and his impact will continue to inspire us all,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of former Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers. He dedicated his life to public service and strengthening our community. From his early days as a corrections officer to becoming the longest-serving sheriff in county history, he led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to justice.” said Congressman Eric Sorensen (D-17th). “His leadership left a lasting impact on Winnebago County, and his legacy of service will not be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him. May he rest in peace.”
