Fresno County supervisor says fatal collisions down 50%

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – After Fresno County ran a Traffic Safety Campaign, new data revealed the number of fatalities dropped in Fresno County.

Fresno County has been among the leading counties in the state in the number of traffic fatalities. 

“It comes down to people driving too fast, driving under the influence and driving while distracted,” Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig said. 

The Traffic Safety Campaign involving the County, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s office started in November and ran through the end of December.

“My goal, my hope is that we can work together as a community to be mindful of these three very simple facts and for people to put those facts into practice and we can continue to save lives in 2025,” Magsig said.

The Fresno Area CHP office totaled 79 fatal car accidents in 2024.

“These are families that these people belong to that are going to be broken forever,” Magsig said.

Magsig said that number is now down 50%.

“I was surprised that just by reminding the public, using billboards, using television, using the radio, was enough to save more than one life,” Magsig said. “It’s important for us, for government, for the media, just to continue to repeat that message to slow down, get a designated driver if you’ve been drinking and put your phone down while you’re in your car.”

Magsig said while the reduction in overall deaths is encouraging the county will continue its initiative to prevent more collisions from happening.
