Voyeur arrested for recording individuals in bathroom without consent

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (WPHL) — A South Jersey man was arrested on Tuesday for recording individuals in the bathroom without their consent in an investigation that began in September 2024.

Police in the Township of Hamilton charged Daniel Zhang, 23, with 15 counts of Invasion of Privacy. Detectives say Zhang has at least 50 videos of victims in public restrooms in Mays Landing, N.J., Bedford, N.J., Egg Harbor City, N.J., and in Bermuda. Some of the oldest videos were recorded in May.

Zhang was arrested following one of the last encounters cited on September 14 in the bathroom of a Planet Fitness at the Hamilton Mall shopping center on Black Horse Pike in Mays Landing, N.J.

“It sounded like there was a commotion going on in the stalls, you know, enough to ask, ‘What’s going on over there?'”

gym member Joseph Hayes said on Action News at 10. “That’s what I walked into: the guy trying to get his phone back from the guy who saw some pictures of him on his phone.”

Investigators said that prompted an investigation into Zhang, but it wasn’t until March when he was arrested and charged.

In an affidavit, Zhang admits to recording at least one other victim on his phone along with the individual who witnesses said caught him at the Planet Fitness. The affidavit also citing Zhang who said, “Attraction is what makes him want to record them.”

Police said more charges could be filed as there are more victims who Zhang allegedly recorded.
