INDOT sent 28,000 warnings for speeding in northeast side 465 construction zone

INDOT sent 28,000 warnings for speeding in northeast side 465 construction zone
INDIANAPOLIS – Thousands of drivers have received notices for speeding through a busy construction zone on the northeast side.

Earlier this year, the Indiana Department of Transportation put speed cameras along the I-465 and I-69 interchange as work continues on the “Clear Path 465” project.

The cameras are part of INDOT’s “Safe Zones” program. Drivers caught going 11 mph over the posted 45 mph speed limit will get a notice in the mail.

INDOT sent thousands of those notices in January alone—about 28,000 of them, according to Natalie Garrett, the agency’s strategic communications director.

Currently, the speed camera project is in its “pre-enforcement” phase designed to get drivers to slow down. Repeat offenses could result in fines of up to $150.

INDOT installed speed zone cameras along a busy I-70 work zone in Hancock County last summer. The agency said it saw a 70% reduction in speeding.

It’s hoping to see a similar trend on the northeast side.

“Clear Path 465” construction is set to last through the end of the year. The project aims to add more travel lanes, ramp lanes and bridges to ease congestion along one of the area’s busiest interstate corridors.
