Daviess Co. Sheriff Deputy injured in crash; driver charged

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Daviess County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured in a vehicle crash on Saturday involving an impaired driver.

According to a media release, just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office responded to an EMS call in reference to a female who had fallen out of a vehicle.

Deputy Hunter Goble, along with two other deputies responded to the call.

The release states that while en route, Deputy Goble was traveling west on Old US Highway 50 and approaching the intersection of Cindy Kay Drive when a 2010 Dodge Challenger failed to yield the right of way and pulled into Deputy Goble’s path. 

According to the media release, Deputy Goble did everything he could to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful. When the collision occurred, Deputy Goble’s patrol vehicle was thrown off the south side of the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. The Challenger remained in the roadway with heavy front-end damage. 

One of the deputies en route continued to the initial EMS call.

The second deputy en route responded to the crash and was assisted by several Washington Police Department Officers.

Deputy Goble was transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper with a head injury, pain to his right arm and leg, and several lacerations to his head, arm, and leg.  Deputy Goble was treated and released.

The driver of the Challenger was identified as 20-year-old Karina Hernandez of Monroe City.

Hernandez was transported to Daviess Community Hospital for complaints of pain.  Initial chemical test results show Hernandez had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .229% and tested positive for THC and opiates.  Hernandez was medically cleared and then transported to the security center for lodging. 

Karina Hernandez faces the following charges:

  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (OVWI) causing serious bodily injury (2 counts)
  • OVWI causing bodily injury (2 counts)
  • OVWI with prior
  • Driving While Suspended
  • Minor Consuming

Hernandez was also found to be operating with no vehicle insurance. 

Hernandez was previously arrested on January 3, 2025, for OVWI with an alcohol concentration Equivalent to .15 or more.  She was convicted of the charge in February.

Two passengers in the Challenger were transported to Daviees Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A third passenger was treated at the scene.

The Washington Police Department is investigating the incident.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Washington Police Department, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Daviess County Ambulance Service, and Briggeman’s Wrecker Service.
