6 day hikes for spring in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Spring is nearly here, and what better way to shake off the winter frost than with a hike?

Popular hiking app AllTrails has over 1,000 trails, with even more secret trails available in the 19,375 square miles of forests in the Bluegrass.

FOX 56 has narrowed the selection down to some popular options to get you in a hiking mood and see the fall colors before the cold weather sets in for good.

Here is a short list of some popular hikes across central and eastern Kentucky, many great for a spring day trip; just be sure to check the weather before you head out.

Short and accessible:

1. McConnell Springs Trail

  • This park trail is located inside Lexington and is just over a half-mile. It features a paved loop walking path and some water features as you walk.

2. Flat Lick Falls Trail in Daniel Boone National Forest

  • This hike runs just over a half-mile, with some paved walkways. Those using mobility equipment may need some assistance.

3. Dog Slaughter Falls Trail in Cumberland Falls State Park

  • The trail runs 2.4 miles and rewards the hiker with a waterfall that feeds a small pool that flows into the Cumberland River.

4. Indian Staircase Trail in Daniel Boone National Forest

  • Running 3.1 miles on this trail, the trail is a climb and will have you moving up the mountain a lot, but it will reward you with a view of the mountains and all of the fall colors.

A challenge:

5. Cloud Splitter Short Cut Tail in Daniel Boone National Forest

  • An out-and-back intense trail that requires a short rope climb to finish. The trail is just over a mile long and will give you a treetop view as a reward.

6. Pilot Knob and Sage Point Loop in Pilot Knob State Nature Preserve

  • This trail is tied to Kentucky history and is marked “Boone’s Overlook,” where many say Daniel Boone first looked over the Bluegrass region. The trail runs 1.25 miles and offers historical views for those who finish it.
