The ATV Safety Institute urges riders to take a training course—either in person or online—before getting behind the wheel.
Riders should always follow trail signs, inspect their vehicles before riding, and wear proper safety gear.
“Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet. Eye protection. You want to have full-fingered gloves to protect your hands. Long sleeves. Long pants at a minimum—again, to keep your arms and legs protected—and over-the-ankle boots to really protect your ankles,” Andria Yu, ATV safety instructor.
The Institute also warns: never drive an ATV on pavement, and always supervise riders under 16.
