Caretaker accused of pouring boiling water on man with autism in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Police arrested a woman accused of injuring a man with autism after pouring boiling water on him.

Police officers were called to the Harmony Center Group Home on Florida Boulevard on Nov.12, 2024, to investigate after a man with autism was found with a severe burn on his back.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, detectives learned that the man’s caretaker, Dairyonna James, 29, poured boiling water on the man after he grabbed her to get her attention.

James was charged with cruelty to the infirm and aggravated second-degree battery. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday.

Police noted that James had no prior criminal history.
