Henyard has refused multiple interview requests after more than a year’s worth of WGN Investigates reporting exposing questionable spending, allegations of cronyism and corruption. The FBI has served subpoenas on both of the governments Henyard runs.
“We got here by a rogue mayor that decided she didn’t want to listen to voices of the community,” said trustee Jason House, who is running against Henyard. “WGN’s reporting, and all the other reports out there, have helped the community get the true picture of what’s going on.”
Henyard’s closing argument to voters came in a flurry of social media posts in the election’s final days and included a music video that features the self-proclaimed “supermayor” clapping back at her critics.
“They put me in office and treat me like it’s illegal to feed the people,” Henyard’s synthesized voice is heard singing. “I gave back to the community and cleaned the streets up. I’m feeding the people. They put me in office and treat me like it’s illegal.”
She also posted videos celebrating her work distributing food, hosting community events and building a skating rink. WGN Investigates has previously reported on the high cost of Henyard’s events.
Trustees hired former Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot to investigate spending. Lightfoot determined Henyard and her allies hid their expenses from trustees and drove the village into a multi-million dollar deficit.
Thornton Township democrats previously voted against slating Henyard to continue as township supervisor in a move she claimed was “illegal”. She has filed to run as a write-in candidate in that April 1st election.
In Dolton, Henyard’s team is running against a slate of incumbents, some of whom were on her ticket in 2021.
Polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Watch WGN News at 9pm for election results.
