CHICAGO (WGN) — The Chicago Cubs have traded outfielder Alexander Canario to the New York Mets, according to latest reports.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports the Cubs traded Canario to the Mets for cash considerations. The 24-year-old was designated for assignment last Thursday to make room for free agent acquisition Justin Turner before the North Siders made the trade.

With Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker entrenched at all three outfield spots, Canario departs Chicago after having limited opportunities in a logjammed outfield at Wrigley Field.

In 21 games over the past two seasons, Canario slashed .286/.333/.524 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles and 8 RBI in 25 at-bats.

The Cubs play the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. CST.
