According to Kentucky State Police, around 11 p.m., Nelson County dispatchers called KSP to investigate a crash near mile marker 13 near Bardstown.
At the scene, troopers learned that Nelson Pacheco Jr., 20, of Cicero, IL, was changing a tire while another pedestrian, Amari Mays-Clark, 20, of Frankfort, was standing nearby.
Initial investigations showed that a Jeep Grand Cherokee crossed the fog line, hit both Pacheco and Mays-Clark, and reportedly continued driving.
The Nelson County Coroner’s Office declared Mays-Clark dead at the scene, and KSP said Pacheco was taken to Baptist Health Hardin to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to KSP, the alleged driver of the Jeep, Jason Hamilton, 48, turned himself in to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with:
According to an arrest citation, Hamilton claimed he had been drinking in Bardstown before the crash, and a trooper claimed he still smelled like alcohol.
The westbound lanes of the Bluegrass Parkway were closed for several hours while troopers investigated the crash.
Hamilton was booked into the Nelson County Correctional Center on a $500,000 cash bond.
A GoFundMe was set up by the Mays-Clark family, where, as of the time of this writing, over $22,000 of the $35,000 goal had been raised.
