17-year-old boy dies in single vehicle accident in Daviess County

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A 17-year-old boy has died in Daviess County after a tragic single-car accident that happened early Saturday morning.

The 17-year-old was identified by officials as John Moore (17) or also known as “JD.”

According to a news release from the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Moore was reported missing by his mother, Shelly Moore, after he failed to return home by 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22nd.

Mrs. Moore immediately contacted local authorities to report JD’s absence. Deputies immediately initiated a search, attempting to ping the 17-year-old’s cell phone, and checking several locations, but could not locate him.

Approximately at 7:24 a.m. on Saturday, John Moore, JD’s father contacted the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office to report a vehicle in the water, upside down on County Road 1100 E, north of County Road 800 N.

First responders arrived at the scene, discovering a 2000 Mercury overturned in a deep ditch, partially submerged in water. John “JD” Moore (17) was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial investigation shows the boy driving a 2000 Mercury northbound on County Road 1100 E, north of County Road 800 N and for an unknown reason, the vehicle went off the west side of the roadway, struck a fence line and a guardrail. The vehicle continued down a deep embankment and flipped over onto its top becoming partially submerged in a stream.

Many people have been affected by this incident. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office wishes to express our condolences to the Moore family and their friends.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by several local agencies at the scene, including the Odon Volunteer Fire Department, Madison Volunteer Fire Department, Plainville Volunteer Fire Department, Daviess County Coroner’s Office, Indiana Conservation Officers, Daviess County Ambulance Service, and local towing services from Wagler’s Wrecker and Briggeman’s Wrecker.
