The incident originally happened in August 2023, when 32-year-old Joseph Chastain attacked a man, identified as Matt Griffin, then left in a white Mazda pickup truck. When police arrived at 4819 Southeast Boise Street, they found Griffin with a severe laceration to his leg.
According to Portland police, Griffin had been driving southbound on Southeast Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard and Powell Boulevard when he was cut off by Chastain and honked his horn to avoid getting hit.
After that, Griffin later told KOIN 6 News that Chastain made a finger-gun gesture at him and followed him home.
“So I had every reason, when he jumped out of his vehicle with something dark in his hand, in front of my home, to think he had a gun and that I was about to be murdered,” he added.
When Chastain got out of his car, Griffin also got out and grabbed a hatchet because he was “fearful for his life.” He reportedly told Chastain to leave him alone.
Authorities said Chastain ran toward Griffin, pushed him to the ground, took the hatchet from the him and assaulted him.
After applying a tourniquet to Griffin’s leg to control the bleeding, he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Griffin later said he survived thanks to tissue and bone grafts from a donor.
After a four-month investigation, detectives served a search warrant at Chastain’s home and found the hatchet. This led to his arrest on Dec. 7, 2023 on charges of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
At his sentencing on Friday, Chastain took a plea deal and pled guilty to attempted assault in the first degree.
He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, with credit for time served, plus three years of post-release supervision.
