Heavy rainfall that could result in flash flooding predicted

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Paducah has predicted a weather system that could bring higher than normal amounts of rainfall western Kentucky this weekend, beginning overnight Friday, followed by a blast of freezing temperatures early next week.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) drainage infrastructure could potentially be overwhelmed by high intensity rainfall causing some temporary ponding on and along roadways. Localized areas of roadways flooding is possible, which could make some roads impassable quickly.

Officials say motorists are urged to use caution when traveling, and be aware of areas that frequently flood during heavy rains. Also be aware that some areas that do not normally flood could potentially be impacted by the amounts of rainfall in the forecast.

The KYTC gives these safety measures:

  • Reduce traveling speed on wet roads.
  • Avoid using cruise control on wet roads. It can increase the risk for hydroplaning.
  • Avoid driving through high water.

Officials say KYTC personnel will be on standby if they need to respond to high water. If necessary, maintenance crews will place signage on roads that have high water and flooding.
