Former USPS employee speaks on chaos inside new facility

INDIANAPOLIS – FOX59/CBS4 viewers are continuing to reach out with delays in mail service in the Indianapolis area.

Local mail service companies have blamed the problems on the new USPS facility on the east side of town.

Kelly Jackson worked as a mail processing clerk at the new hub back in October. Her job was to check in trucks and scan the skids of packages.

“A lot of times those would come off or there’d be some (mail) on the floor of the trailer, and they would just have you throw them in the box, or tape them back on the box and they didn’t always go with that actual shipment,” said Jackson.

When mail came in that was damaged, she said it was set aside and forgotten about.

“We would put those in big bins, and they would sit there for two or three weeks and just keep adding and it’s mail from different places,” said Jackson.

She also said that there were not enough forklift drivers for the amount of pallets coming in and out of the bays.

Semis wrap around the building daily, some said they’ve waited over six hours to be helped. Jackson said they were instructed to help those who were sitting there the longest first, but that wasn’t always the case.

“There would be other things, like a truck waiting on the other side to go out, and so they’d say,’ No, don’t do this one, do that one,’ even if they’d only been there a couple of hours,” she said.

She said that she received little to no training and it was more of a “learn from your mistakes” experience.

“As I watched those boxes just fill up and sit there and sit there, I kind of thought to myself, ‘Well, how do they track that?’” said Jackson.

After six weeks, Jackson still didn’t feel she had a grasp on her job responsibilities and resigned. The wait is frustrating for customers, like Harold Vangundy.

He ordered sentimental antique mugs from eBay and said he’s been waiting for four months to receive them.

“They’re probably in that building somewhere, but from the looks of that building, it may never be found,” said Vangundy.

Both Vangundy and Jackson said they’ve lost trust in the U.S. Postal Service from all the recent issues.

“I’d just like for everybody to know when they ship something to me, I just like for them to use UPS rather than USPS,” said Vangundy.

USPS is asking customers experiencing mail issues to visit their website and reach out via email or social media.

The postal system added that winter weather can also be impacting deliveries right now. Congressman Jefferson Shreve wrote to USPS expressing concerns about the delays linked to the Indianapolis distribution hub.

Indiana’s Congressional Delegation is requesting a detailed explanation of the causes of the delays and steps to address them.
