Lost Rabbit residents fight to keep green space

MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Some Madison County residents are fighting to preserve a beloved green space in their community.

In the Town of Lost Rabbit, there is a three-acre waterfront park where residents often walk their dogs, fish and spend time with others.

According to a recent master plan by developers, the space is considered Shoreline Park. The developers plan to build four single-family homes on the land.

“It is really frustrating, especially when you look at 10 years ago when we already had this battle, we’ve already put this to bed. We shouldn’t even be here today talking about it, yet here we are,” said Donna Taylor, Lost Rabbit Residents Committee member.

Residents met with the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (PRVWSD) Shoreline Development Committee, urging them to reject any consideration of developments on the green space. The board was provided documentation of the B1 Phase development and promotional designs.

Lawn care services and tree maintenance on the space are paid for by the residents. Some said complaints about Shoreline and canal erosion in the area are up in the air.

“All these homes are zero lot lines, and we have to have somewhere to take it all to kids and throw the football and go out and, you know, have a picnic. It’s just… there’s no other greenspace,” said Jason Young, who lives in the Town of Lost Rabbit.

The board agreed to add the item to their agenda to be voted on within the second or third week in March 2025.

WJTV 12 News reached out to the developers about the plans. As of publication, we have not received a response.
