Punxsutawney Phil predicts more winter: Is that true for the Big Country?
BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Yesterday was Groundhog Day, and after a long winter that’s still going strong for some, Punxsutawney Phil’s decision carried a bit more weight this year. Every year, we wait for this little guy to tell us whether we’re in for an early spring or six more weeks of winter.

The prediction is based on whether he sees his shadow — if he does, we get six more weeks of winter; if not, we’re supposed to have an early spring. Historically, Phil tends to see his shadow about 84% of the time, meaning winter usually gets a little longer. He predicts early spring only 16% of the time.

This year, Phil did see his shadow, predicting more winter ahead. Of course, this prediction has sparked more backlash than excitement — some people were hoping for something different, and others think the whole thing is a bit silly.

Here in the Big Country, the forecast doesn’t exactly match Phil’s prediction, but could he be onto something about the weather ahead? Let’s see.

Heading into the new workweek, temperatures are set to rise after a cool January, with more below-average days than usual. The next few days will be warm, with highs in the 80s, but come the weekend, temperatures will dip back down to more seasonal levels. So, even though it feels like a false spring right now, the following cooler temps could back up Phil’s forecast. Or we could keep bouncing between seasons.

Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center’s 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks show below-average temperatures for most of the U.S. from February 9th to the 17th, so February might be a bit chillier than the start. After that, it’s too early to tell, but with winter technically lasting until March 20th, we could still get a late cold snap.

As for Phil’s prediction, we won’t truly know if he was right until the end of winter. Right now, we’re looking at a warm first week of February, followed by cooler weather for the rest of the month. To stay on top of the latest updates, make sure to check in with your local meteorologists!
