If Punxsutawney the Groundhog were in Fresno, would he see his shadow?

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Punxsutawney the Groundhog will be making his appearance on Sunday, but will he see his shadow? Probably – if he were in the Central Valley.

Every year on Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil is brought outside in front of an eager crowd waiting to see if he will see his shadow. According to folklore, if he does, winter will last another six weeks.

YourCentralValley.com spoke to CBS47’s meteorologist to hear her prediction. She predicts that Punxsutawney would in fact see his shadow if he were in the Central Valley.

Referencing the current forecast, she explained that Sunday is expected to be partly cloudy and the partial cloud cover would create the right conditions for shadows.

However, despite the folklore, the predictions centered around Punxsutawney have nothing to do with the actual seasons. According to Stormfax, an almanac that has been tracking the results of Groundhog Day since 1887, Punxsutawney is right just 39% of the time.
