St. Charles Catholic football is ready for year two in Division II Select

LAPLACE, La. — St. Charles Catholic is no stranger to the state championship spotlight with two Division III Select state championships and three straight finals appearances under head coach Wayne Stein.

But the 2024 season marked their first year in Division II Select, where the Comets saw four wins and a second-round exit from the playoffs.

“I know it will look like it was an adjustment moving up, but we had to replace 17 starters from that run that we had went on. We do return 14 starters. So, the expectations are exactly what they always are here, and that’s to make a run. So we think we’re a better football team,” said St. Charles Catholic head coach Wayne Stein.

St. Charles Catholic’s offense returns four of five starters on the offensive line.

The group is expected to create for running back Skylar Edwards and protect junior Landree Leblanc, who is entering year two as the Comets’ starting quarterback.

Leblanc has been tested in several big game settings across multiple sports.

“We might have thrown him into the fire before he was ready. I think that we will reap the benefits from that this year. You know, we did see growth throughout the season. I thought by the end of the season, he was playing at a higher level,” said Stein.

Defensively, the Comets return seven starters, and that list includes Brooks Monica, Dax Pregeant, Chrisdon McClain, Tyler Bovia, Creed Marix, Byron Bailey, and Prystyn Cambre.

Cambre currently holds offers from Southeastern and South Alabama.

When talking about the senior defensive back, Stein says Cambre has shown “phenomenal growth each and every year. That’s what I’ve been proud of.”

Stein added, “I think the sky’s the limit for him. I think his best football is still out in front of him.”

St. Charles Catholic will need its stars to play their very best with a tough schedule in 2025 that features Dunham, St. James, Terrebonne, and defending state champion Shaw in district play.

“There are no W’s on that schedule. You’re going to have to go earn it every week. We were a handful of plays away from being 7-4 or 8-3. Instead, we were 4-7. And that’s the games that we’ve won in the past. And we’re going to have to win those games this year,” said Stein.

St. Charles Catholic will scrimmage University Lab and play East St. John jamboree week. The Comets open the 2025 regular season against Newman on Thursday, September 4th.
