OMAHA, Neb. — The LSU Tigers are no strangers to weather delays, and Monday night in their College World Series matchup with UCLA, LSU encountered another one.
A near three-hour delay began in the top of the fourth inning with LSU on top, 5-3.
UCLA opened Monday’s winner’s bracket contest with three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.
LSU would respond in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Jake Brown that cut the Bruins’ lead to two runs.
Moments later, Jared Jones would belt a three-run home run to right center field that would give the Tigers a one-run advantage. The sight, an encouraging one, considering that Jones struck out five times in LSU’s College World Series Opener against Arkansas.
Luis Hernandez would add an RBI single in the bottom of the third to give LSU a two-run cushion ahead of the delay, which began around 7:20 p.m.
After allowing three earned runs in the first inning, LSU starting pitcher Anthony Eyanson proceeded to retire six of the next seven batters he faced.
The delay could signal the end of Eyanson’s first appearance in the College World Series. One, he will finish with three earned runs, four hits allowed, and one strikeout in three innings of action.
LSU and UCLA will resume play Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The loser of the winner’s bracket bout will play Arkansas in an elimination game Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner gets another day off and will play again Wednesday night.
