NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Edna Karr alum and former LSU defensive end Andre Anthony made his head coaching debut with Bonnabel versus Sophie B. Wright at Pan American Stadium Thursday night.

The former pass rusher’s influence showed in the Bruins’ defensive performance. Bonnabel shutout the Warriors 36-0 to secure Anthony the first win of his career.

“We wanted to set the tone. We wanted to show everybody it’s a new regime. It’s a new Bonnabel,” the Bruins head coach said.

Bonnabel and Sophie B. Wright both struggled to start the game though. The Bruins and Warriors both committed turnovers: fumbling the ball on consecutive drives. However, Bonnabel found its offensive rhythm in the second quarter.

Quarterback Karl Perkins’ 68-yard run set up his own one-yard, QB sneak touchdown, and the Bruins reached the end zone two more times before halftime: a 31-yard touchdown pass from Perkins to Elijah Martin and a punt block return touchdown.

“My thing is that I’m going to preach to the guys is we gotta start out fast. It shouldn’t happen when we go in the locker room, get a speech and all this. No, let’s start off like that,” Anthony continued.

Bonnabel will travel to Destrehan in week two, and Sophie B. Wright will face Patrick F. Taylor.
