GRETNA, La. (WGNO) — At Young Audiences Charter School in Gretna, there’s a 10-year-old with a mind for math.

“My brain says math,” says Nigel Garbutt.

And WGNO Good Morning New Orleans features reporter Bill Wood believes that’s a slam dunk.

With math and with basketball, Nigel made his way to New York City.

That’s where he was part of the NBA’s Math Hoops Program.

Students play board games based on basketball.

And by playing, they learn math.

“I don’t believe that the old math book has been replaced by this new board game, but the new board game helps reinforce what is being taught through the old math books,” said math teacher Sylvester Major.

From multiplying and dividing to geometry and data analysis. This game’s got game and the blessing of the NBA.
