New Orleans authorities stepping up anti-dumping efforts

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Illegal dumping of tires and other trash is a persistent problem in neighborhoods across the city of New Orleans.

Several agencies have ramped up their efforts to combat the problem.

District D City Councilman Eugene Green was contacted this week about a recent incident.

“I got a call at about 8 a.m. saying that the workers could not get in or out of a U.S. Postal facility and someone had chosen to dump tires. I am pleased to say that the city’s Department of Sanitation responded immediately within two and a half hours and got those tires removed because this is, in fact, a city street,” said Green.

In the past week, the New Orleans Police Department arrested Steven Miller and Richard John Bulot IV, both of Slidell, for separate incidents of illegal dumping after their vehicles were recorded on camera.

Green says, “I appreciate the work of the New Orleans Police Department that’s cracking down. Right now, there are 13 investigations underway, and multiple arrests have taken place. I just want people to recognize that we’re serious about this illegal dumping.”

While Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, the Department of Transportation and Development and the NOPD are using technology to catch folks that are dumping, the fact is that it’s still a significant problem. There is still a lot of evidence of dumping in New Orleans East off the Michoud Boulevard exit on Interstate 10.

“There is cooperation going on. It’s a problem that needs to be address by multiple agencies and it’s going to take a while for it to get it completely under wraps,” said Green.

Of the 13 investigations that Green mentioned, one is Dominic John Tauzier. He was arrested and charged with dumping on June 9. After his release, police say they have evidence of two additional dumping incidents on June 18 and June 23.
