In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, Northshore Food Bank and other food banks across the greater New Orleans area, the drive will collect nonperishable food items and diapers through Saturday, Nov. 25.
According to UWSELA officials, this drive will help families who will be greatly impacted by suspended SNAP benefits due to the federal government shutdown. Volunteers and UWSELA staff will bring donations to different food banks in the region.
The food drive is a part of UWSELA’s Government Shutdown Relief Fund, which was created to provide emergency assistance for workers and nonprofit organizations during this time.
UWSELA officials advise that people donate the following items:
- Grains: breakfast cereal, oatmeal, pasta, rice, crackers, flour, grits and healthy snacks
- Proteins: canned meat (chicken and tuna), dried beans, canned beans, lentils, peanut butter, trail mix
- Milk: evaporated milk, shelf-stable milk and dry milk
- Fruits and vegetable: canned fruits and vegetables, shelf stable fruit or vegetable juices, tomato sauce and fruit cups
- Baby items: diapers and formula
