NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — As homecoming week kicked off for Xavier University, so did the popup pantry.

Spot Me Inc. business owner and Xavier alumna, Dr. Tanaya Kizzine, returned to her old stomping grounds, distributing feminine hygiene bags to students.

Creating her business three years ago, her goal is to stamp out period insecurity and period poverty.

“I started this mission because of a young lady at my church who was searching for a product, and she couldn’t find one anywhere in sight. So I started the mission to help others who may not be able to otherwise support them,” Dr. Kizzine said.

Dr. Kizzine said she and others packed ahead of homecoming, filling bags with pads, tampons, feminine wipes, and shrink towels.

She understands menstrual products can be expensive, especially for young women, as not every student has easy access to menstrual products.

“When you’re a young girl in college, you might not be able to afford food. If you can’t afford food, you can’t afford period products. That’s why I came back to serve Xavier. I bought 100 bags for our centennial, and I also serve at Prairie View A&M,” Kizzine said.

As students picked up a bag, Dr. Kizzine hopes to make more, reaching as many young women as she can, one feminine hygiene bag at a time.

“They’re often very happy because they get to choose what they need based on what they need is at that time. It offers a variety of products, tampons, and pads, but the pads are in different sizes,” Kizzine said.
