
The Louisiana Department of Health reported a confirmed neuroinvasive human West Nile virus case and another presumptive human WNV case that is still being investigated. While most human WNV cases are asymptomatic, common symptoms include headaches, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, in rare cases, severe illness can occur.
People over the age of 60, the immunocompromised and those with pre-existing medical conditions are at greater risk of severe illness.
The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board will conduct an area-wide adulticide spray mission on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The treatment will be conducted 8:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. in the following areas:
- Central City, Milan, Touro and the Garden District bounded by south Claiborne Avenue, Tchoupitoulas Street, Napoleon Avenue, and the Pontchartrain Expressway.
- Uptown/Carrollton and the Fourteenth Ward bounded by South Claiborne Avenue, St Charles Avenue, Broadway Street and Jefferson Avenue.
- Broadmoor and Hoffman Triangle bounded by South Broad Street, Fontainebleau Drive, Broadway Street, South Claiborne Avenue and I-10.
- Mid-City, Bayou St. John, and Tremé/Lafitte bounded by Esplanade Avenue, I-10, North Carrollton Avenue and North Claiborne Avenue.
- Fairgrounds and Seventh Ward bounded by I-610, Moss Street, Esplanade Avenue, I-10 and Annette Street.
- Seventh Ward bounded by I-610, Annette Street, North Claiborne Avenue, Franklin Avenue, Florida Avenue and I-10.
The NOMTRCB will conduct larvicide spray missions Wednesday, Aug. 20 to target standing water where mosquitos lay their eggs. They will be conducted by helicopter between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in the following areas:
- English Turn bounded by English Turn Parkway, the parish line, LA-406 and English Turn Drive.
- English Turn bounded by River Road, English Turn Parkway, LA-406 and Stanton Road.
- Old Aurora bounded by Patterson Drive, Woodland Highway, Sullen Place and the Intracoastal Waterway.
- Brechtel Park.
- Behrman bounded by Vespasian Street, Sandra Drive, Pace Boulevard and West Park Court.
Another case of West Nile virus in Orleans Parish was reported on Aug. 8.
