SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNO) — The mother of a former Edna Karr student who was killed in a shooting spoke at a press conference Monday, July 21.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old Corey Adams was killed in a shooting Saturday, July 19 in Cordova, Tennessee. Five people were injured in the shooting. Deputies found Adams in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died on the scene. The other four were hospitalized.

According to SCSO, a pool party was being held at a residence in Fern Glen Cove. Police said over a hundred people were present. Gunfire erupted and five people were struck, including Adams. More than 40 rounds of shell casings were found by both a rifle and a pistol.

Adams’ mother, Chantrel Bernhart, spoke at a press conference with the SCSO.

“He wasn’t doing anything besides pursuing his dream of becoming an NFL player,” Bernhart said. “And he was doing a phenomenal job, and they took it from him. They took it from him. I didn’t get to see him fulfill his dreams.”

Bernhart said Adams was only at the party for ten minutes before the shooting occurred.

“On my birthday, on Wednesday, he texted me ‘mom, I love you so much happy birthday, sometimes people don’t have their mother or have such a good mother like you and I appreciate you being who you are, and I love you so much you’re so wonderful.’ That’s the type of things my son would tell me every day,” Bernhart said.

Bernhart asked for the public’s help in bringing justice for her son. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH or contact detectives at 901-222-5600.
