NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A man has been arrested on Thursday following a fatal stabbing that occurred in New Orleans East on Wednesday evening, June 18.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the stabbing, which happened in the 21700 block of Chef Menteur Highway, was reported to officials by a driver in the area, who, around 4:40 p.m., claimed to have seen two men physically fighting one another.

Police say one of the men, later identified as 33-year-old Nicholas Ortega, allegedly stabbed the other man multiple times before fleeing in a silver SUV, leaving the victim to later be declared dead on scene.

Troopers from the Louisiana State Police’s Troop NOLA along with VCAIT detectives then say they found a vehicle matching the description on Interstate 610 in New Orleans. Around 6:10 p.m., they reportedly stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Fig and Dante streets, detaining Ortega for questioning.

During the questioning, detectives said they determined Ortega as the alleged perpetrator of the stabbing. He was then arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on one count of second-degree murder.
