BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Pantry 279 will receive a large-scale food delivery in June as part of a nationwide effort to supply food banks ahead of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The pantry, located at 3610 W. State Road 46 in Bloomington, is scheduled to receive deliveries at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. June 24, 2026. Each delivery is part of an effort to send 250 truckloads of food to communities across the country throughout 2026. Each truck carries about 40,000 pounds of food, according to organizers.
Pantry 279 is seeking 15 to 20 volunteers per shift to help unload, sort and organize the food. Each shift is expected to last two to three hours. Volunteers are asked to wear close-toed shoes.
The shipments include staple food items such as canned goods, dry goods and other essentials intended to support local families experiencing food insecurity.
“We are so excited for this delivery and have been eagerly awaiting it since January,” said Cindy Chavez, executive director of Pantry 279. “With climbing food and gas prices, more and more of our donors are now in our lines hoping for a little relief by getting much needed healthy food from us.”
The Bloomington delivery is part of a broader effort led by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in collaboration with the America250 Commission, a nonpartisan initiative focused on the 250th anniversary of the country.
“As we mark this historic milestone, we hope to foster a spirit of unity, peacemaking and goodwill,” said Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Volunteer efforts are being coordinated in part through JustServe.org. Residents interested in helping can sign up online or contact Pantry 279 at 812-606-1524 for more information.
