According to New Jersey News 12, researchers analyzed accidents, DUIs, speeding tickets, and citations to determine which towns had the highest and lowest incident rates. Old Bridge recorded 83.3 incidents per 1,000 drivers, edging out Brick at 81.0. Lakewood wasn’t far behind at 79.7.
East Orange ranked fourth worst with 74.0 incidents per 1,000 residents, while Piscataway rounded out the bottom five at 71.0.
The state’s most populous cities recorded the lowest incident rates despite heavy traffic. Camden led with just 46.6 incidents per 1,000 drivers. Newark followed at 50.4, and Jersey City at 52.5.
Paterson came in fourth best at 53.3 incidents, and Passaic completed the top five at 56.5.
The study also examined age groups and vehicle brands to identify trends among motorists across the state. Gen Z drivers proved the riskiest on state roads, recording 103.3 incidents per 1,000 drivers — more than double all other age groups combined.
Vehicle brand appeared to correlate with driving behavior, too. Ram drivers ranked worst behind the wheel in the state. Chrysler drivers had the lowest incident rates.
