BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — May 21, 2026
Bloomington High School South returned to normal operations Thursday after a shelter-in-place was issued because of a report of a possible threat to the school, according to Monroe County Community School Corporation.
Sarah DeWeese, director of strategic communications for MCCSC, said the incident was resolved and involved a BB gun.
According to a message sent to the Bloomington High School South community, an individual reported seeing a student carrying what appeared to be a handgun while approaching the school. The report prompted the school to enter a shelter-in-place while the school safety team followed established safety protocols in coordination with local authorities.
The student was apprehended by local authorities before entering the school and was found to be carrying a BB gun, according to MCCSC.
“All school operations have now returned to normal,” the district said in the message. “We are thankful to the individual who made the report and local authorities for their swift response.”
The district said student safety remains its highest priority and encouraged anyone who sees something concerning to report it. Tips may be submitted anonymously through the StopIt App link on the MCCSC website.
No injuries were reported in the district’s message.
