Stamp Out Hunger food drive scheduled for Today in Mountain Home

The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive will take place Saturday to help support the Mountain Home Food Basket. The nationwide food drive is coordinated locally through the Mountain Home Post Office and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Residents are asked to place nonperishable food items near their mailboxes before regular mail delivery Saturday so letter carriers can collect donations.

Food Basket President Cheryl Newman was a recent guest on KTLO’s Talk of the Town and says the food drive collected approximately 5,200 pounds of food last year. Her goal this year is to collect 9,000 pounds.

According to Newman, items such as peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, soup, pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles and crackers are especially helpful because they are regularly included in food boxes distributed to clients.

The Mountain Home Food Basket was established in 1985 to assist residents facing food insecurity and continues to distribute food to area families six days a week. Newman said the organization serves approximately 500 households each month and relies entirely on donations and volunteers.

The Food Basket serve their clients Monday through Saturday mornings from 10 to 12 and is located at 1341 Eastside Center Court. For more information about volunteering or to make food or financial donations residents are encouraged to stop by or call 870-425-6902.
