Dick Tracy: 1961-1964 Graphic Novel Collection Announced by Clover Press

The early ’60s were a creatively fertile period for the long-running Dick Tracy comic strip, and that era is being celebrated in a new set of collected editions from Clover Press and the Library of American Comics. Clover Press is gearing up to crowdfund a new bundle called Dick Tracy: 1961-1964.

As the name suggests, this collection features four softcover books that each reprint an entire calendar year of Chester Gould’s work on the Dick Tracy comic strip. These volumes feature new cover art from Cat Staggs, Brent Schoonover, Howie Noel, and Daniel Hillyard.

Backers will receive all four hardcovers at once. The campaign includes various optional extras like stickers, trading cards, and a lithograph of Gould’s art featured in the New York Sunday News. Additionally, those who pledge within the first 48 hours will receive a discount and an exclusive bookmark with art by Schoonover.

“It’s great to see how Gould handles the themes and fashion of the 60’s, especially working in the Space Race,” said Clover Press Publisher Hank Kanalz in a statement. “Plus – Moon Maiden! How cool is that?”

“Dick Tracy was my introduction to the great art form of the comic strip,” said Schoonover. “Chester Gould’s style and storytelling was uniquely bold, brash and unforgettable, just like the characters he created. I was instantly hooked and loved reading the dailies in my local paper. Getting the chance to contribute to this collection is an absolute honor.”
