FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A series of closely watched Republican primary contests across Indiana has produced multiple incumbent defeats, while a razor-thin race in Allen County remains unresolved as vote tabulation continues.
Speaking on Fort Wayne’s Morning News, U.S. Senator Jim Banks described the results as part of a broader statewide pattern in which several long-serving Republican state senators were unseated.
“We saw it all across the state,” said Banks, appearing on Fort Wayne’s Morning News with Kayla Blakeslee. “You had so far seven or eight incumbent state senators… and all but one of them so far have lost. And it’s because of the power of the Trump endorsement.”
Banks attributed the outcomes to voter response to endorsements from Donald Trump, while also citing policy disagreements between incumbents and primary voters.
“There’s a lot more here than redistricting,” Banks said. “These are the same types of state senators that go to their district during elections and talk like conservatives, and then they go to the statehouse and… vote to raise taxes.”
In Allen County’s Senate District 15, the contest between incumbent Liz Brown and challenger Darren Vogt remains too close to call. At one point during election night, the margin between the two candidates was reported to be as narrow as four votes.
Trump endorsed Brown, while Banks publicly supported Vogt. As of Wednesday morning, election officials had not finalized the count.
“If Liz Brown wins, it’s only because of the Trump endorsement,” Banks said. “There are still… a few thousand votes that are left to count. We’ll see how it goes. It’s going to be very, very close.”
Banks also raised concerns about the handling of vote counting in Allen County, where delays and procedural questions emerged overnight.
“Watching this election in Allen County is really embarrassing for Allen County,” he said. “This is not how elections are supposed to be run and how votes are supposed to be counted.”
He referenced reports and observations from election night, including interruptions in the counting process.
“Something really wrong with what happened in Allen County last night with the way that they tabulated these votes,” Banks said. “This reminds me of… how states… took days to count.”
Local officials have not publicly confirmed those claims. Vote tabulation was scheduled to resume later in the morning.
With multiple races across the state decided by narrow margins, recount requests are expected. Banks pointed to at least one state Senate race elsewhere in Indiana separated by just three votes.
“There are only so many days… that candidates can request a recount,” he said. “So they better resolve this very quickly in Allen County because it has repercussions for recounts in these very close races.”
Banks said the results have drawn national attention and are being closely monitored by political observers outside Indiana.
“The whole country is watching Indiana,” he said. “My cell phone is blowing up from colleagues and political people all over the country.”
He characterized the primary outcomes as indicative of voter priorities within the Republican electorate.
“The voters… made that case loud and clear,” Banks said. “You can’t ignore them. And when you do ignore them, you’re going to lose.”
Election officials in Allen County are expected to continue counting ballots, with final certification timelines dependent on the completion of tabulation and any subsequent recount requests.
