Xbox ‘Teaming Up’ With Discord For New Game Pass Offering

Microsoft gaming boss Asha Sharma has teased a new collaboration between Game Pass and Discord, as part of further changes to Xbox’s subscription service.

Writing on social media, Sharma said fans would likely “start to see some code in the wild” soon as Xbox and Discord begin building a new level of partnership that sounds like it’ll be exclusive to Game Pass subscribers.

“For years, Xbox and Discord have worked together to make it easier for players to connect, chat, and play across devices,” Sharma wrote. “We’re teaming up again as we continue to make Game Pass more flexible for our players. Some of you might start to see some code in the wild, and we will share more details with you all soon!”

Discord’s social channels then shared Sharma’s post, alongside a graphic featuring the logos for both Discord and Xbox Game Pass, and the caption: “Soon™.”

Exactly what Discord functionality will be coming to Xbox Game Pass subscribers, we’ll have to wait and see. Of course, Discord integration has long been baked into the console’s basic features (as it also now is on PlayStation).

Xbox fans are now speculating that further Discord features will come to the console, or that some more advanced form of Nitro subscription could be included in Game Pass (which already offers one month for free). Recent whispers have suggested that Sharma is keen to make Game Pass more of an à la carte service — potentially, Discord Nitro could be one of the options.

Earlier this week, Sharma announced a shake-up for Microsoft’s gaming subscription by removing new day-one Call of Duty game releases from Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The subscription price had become “too expensive”, she said, and with new COD games gone, Ultimate and PC flavors of the sub are now cheaper. The move follows last year’s eye-watering 50% price increase of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate under the reign of Sharma’s predecessor, Phil Spencer.
