Possibly rabid cat spotted in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON — Northampton Animal Control is urging the public not to approach or attempt to capture a cat spotted Thursday evening that it claims is exhibiting symptoms consistent with rabies.

Animal Control and Northampton Police were unable to spot the cat, described as a medium-sized brown tabby with no white markings and a solid black tail tip, which was “exhibit[ing] neurological symptoms in-line with the rabies virus,” Animal Control posted on Facebook Thursday night.

Last seen at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday heading west from Tyler Court toward Henshaw Avenue, Animal Control stated that the cat has also been spotted on Bright Avenue, State Street and Trumball Road.

The animal is believed to be exhibiting lethargy, mouth movements, panting, disorientation, aggression and restlessness.

“Outdoor cats regularly come into contact with wildlife and are at risk to contract rabies. The rabies virus is communicable to humans, and is often fatal if untreated. If you believe to have come into physical contact with this animal, seek medical attention immediately,” Animal Control wrote. “Ensure your pets are current with rabies and distemper vaccines.”

Animal Control also encouraged residents to contact Public Safety Dispatch at 413-587-1100 if they see the cat.
