Microsoft has released the April 2026 cumulative update KB5083769 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, advancing system builds to 26100.8246 and 26200.8246, respectively.

The update, issued on April 14, 2026, delivers the latest security fixes and performance refinements verified in March’s preview and emergency releases.

Secure Boot Certificate Renewal and Visibility

For enterprise administrators, the update’s most notable improvement is Microsoft’s continued Secure Boot certificate rollout, which ensures compatibility before older certificates expire.

A new visibility feature within the Windows Security app now displays Secure Boot certificate status, including badges and notifications, though this remains disabled by default on commercial systems.

Microsoft also introduced higher-confidence targeting to deliver certificate updates only to qualified devices, reducing rollout risks and ensuring phased deployment across corporate networks.

KB5083769 resolves a serious reliability issue that previously forced certain systems into BitLocker Recovery after Secure Boot changes.

However, Microsoft warned IT managers that devices using an unrecommended BitLocker Group Policy configuration may still trigger recovery requests post-installation.

Enterprises are encouraged to test deployment carefully and confirm recovery-key accessibility before applying the patch in production environments.

The update improves Remote Desktop Protocol (.rdp) security behavior, showing users all requested connection settings before a session begins, with each setting turned off by default.

Windows will also issue a one-time security alert when an RDP file is opened for the first time.

These changes align with Microsoft’s broader Patch Tuesday coverage, addressing a Remote Desktop spoofing vulnerability (CVE-2026-26151) disclosed earlier this month.

Networking reliability received attention as well, with improvements to SMB compression over QUIC to reduce timeouts and enhance transfer stability in remote and cloud-linked environments.

The update also fixes the lingering “Reset this PC” failure, which affected both reset modes following the March 2026 hotpatch (KB5079420).

On the functionality side, KB5083769 upgrades built-in AI modules, including Image Search, Content Extraction, Semantic Analysis, and Settings Model, to version 1.2603.377.0 for enhanced local intelligence and responsiveness.

The update is now available through Windows Update and Microsoft Update, with differential installation for users who have already applied earlier builds.

For defenders and enterprises, KB5083769 represents a routine patch cycle with critical hardening around Secure Boot, BitLocker stability, RDP phishing defense, and system recovery reliability.
