MAHANOY CITY – Borough Council here made moves toward demolishing two homes and accepted ownership of the former Synagogue lot at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Borough officials voted to accept title to the former Beth Israel Synagogue at Mahanoy and Catawissa streets.

The long-vacant house of worship came crashing down in February. It was promptly demolished.

Borough council also voted to accept title to a home at 703 East Centre Street. That home will be taken down through the Land Bank, officials said.

Another property, at 701 East Centre Street, will also be purchased by the borough and taken down through the Land Bank.

In other business, council voted to apply for a grant to replace fencing at the 8th Street and East End parks.

They also heard complaints about a home on the east end of town and a blight condition on the west end.
