Berne police vehicle strikes unconscious person in roadway while responding to call, ISP says

BERNE, Ind. — April 14, 2026

A Berne police officer responding to a report of a suspicious person struck an unconscious individual lying partially in the roadway late Saturday night, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash happened just after 10:45 p.m. Saturday, April 11, on Hendricks Street near Wind Ridge Trail in Berne, state police said in a news release issued Monday.

According to the preliminary investigation, the person who was struck was wearing dark clothing and was lying partially in the road when the officer, who was actively searching for the reported suspicious person, hit the individual.

Police said the officer immediately requested medical assistance after realizing what had happened and began rendering aid until additional help arrived.

Indiana State Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Because the case is still in its early stages, authorities have not released the identities of the injured person or the officer involved.

Further information will be released as it becomes available, police said.
