Prime Video has today confirmed that Young Sherlock has been renewed for a second season. Developed by director Guy Ritchie, Young Sherlock is an origin story for the most iconic detective in literature, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin (the After film series) as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes.

Inspired by Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes book series, Young Sherlock isn’t actually connected to Ritchie’s own Sherlock Holmes films, starring Robert Downey, Jr. Ritchie is set to direct the first episode of the second season.

“Young Sherlock has that rare magic,” said Amazon MGM Studios Head of Global Television Peter Friedlander in a statement provided alongside the announcement. “Millions of fans around the world aren’t just watching a detective story, they’re falling in love with the origin of an icon.

“Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill have cracked the code on making Sherlock’s early years feel fresh, dangerous, and utterly addictive, and have introduced a compelling take on James Moriarty that sets the stage for what’s to come. We can’t wait to see where they take him next in Season Two.”

According to Prime Video, Young Sherlock reached number 1 in more than 95 countries, hitting 45 million viewers across its first 28 days on the service. Alongside Tiffin the show features Dónal Finn (The Wheel of Time, SAS Rogue Heroes), Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale, Shakespeare in Love), Natascha McElhone (Californication, Halo), Max Irons (Condor, The Host) and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman: The Secret Service).

IGN’s review of Young Sherlock’s first eight episode-season praised its “good chemistry, energy, and synergy.”
