EdgeBeam Wireless Buys Sinclair’s Broadspan Platform

EdgeBeam Wireless has acquired the Broadspan distribution platform from Sinclair Inc., a move that includes the platform’s software suite and core engineering team. Terms of the deal were not announced.

The acquisition is intended to accelerate EdgeBeam’s national data distribution network using broadcast infrastructure and ATSC 3.0. EdgeBeam operates as a “Hybrid Network Operator,” combining broadcast spectrum with traditional internet service provider coverage to bypass cellular bottlenecks via multicast technology.

“As the world’s first HNO, we’re reimagining the movement of data at the edge,” Joe Fabiano, EdgeBeam Wireless CTO, said. “The Broadspan software gives us a strategic control point in the network for routing, managing, and sourcing data for a national scale ATSC 3.0 data network.”

Fabiano added that integrating the technology and team provides customers with a unified architecture for services ranging from high-precision positioning to digital signage and public safety applications.

Del Parks, Sinclair president of technology, said data distribution is a “powerful next step” in the evolution of broadcasting.

“Broadspan’s ability to leverage existing broadcast infrastructure and its efficient one-to-many broadcast architecture provides a highly scalable, cost-effective tool for data users, and EdgeBeam is the right partner to lead this platform into its next phase of growth,” Parks said.

The deal doubles EdgeBeam’s technical headcount as specialized software and network engineers from Broadspan join the company. EdgeBeam expects the platform to reduce data distribution costs by broadcasting one file to millions of recipients simultaneously — potentially saving industries billions compared to individual cellular updates.
