Staff report

Bloomington, Ind. – April 7, 2026

Bloomington police arrested a 37-year-old woman Monday night after officers said she barricaded herself inside a home on the city’s south side and refused to surrender for about six hours.

Police were called at about 4:30 p.m. Monday to a residence in the 2000 block of South Rockport Road on a report of a disturbance, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release issued Tuesday.

A 911 caller told dispatchers a woman inside the home appeared to be suffering from a “psychotic break” and was trying to pull out a washing machine, police said. As officers arrived, dispatchers received another call from a man who identified himself as the woman’s boyfriend and said she had chased him from the house while armed with a knife.

Officers approached the residence and saw the woman inside holding a knife, police said. They tried to communicate with her, but she refused to cooperate.

The man, identified by police as a 53-year-old victim, told officers the woman was Heather Ingle of Bloomington. He said Ingle had begun acting strangely about 10 days earlier and battered him while he was washing dishes, according to police. The man told officers Ingle hit and kicked him repeatedly, then armed herself with two kitchen knives, raised them above her head and charged at him as if she were going to stab him. He fled the residence and had been staying with a friend since then, police said.

When he returned to the home Monday, the man noticed several of his belongings were missing and told Ingle she needed to leave, police said. According to the release, Ingle then went to the kitchen, armed herself with two knives and charged at him again, prompting him to flee the house, contact his landlord and call 911.

Police said Ingle barricaded the doors and refused to come out. Members of the Crisis Negotiation Team responded and repeatedly tried to get her to communicate, but she refused those efforts as well.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence, and the department’s Critical Incident Response Team responded to take Ingle into custody. Police sent a remotely piloted aerial vehicle into the house to locate her. After finding her in the living room, police said Ingle struck the device, knocking it from the air, then grabbed it and threw it against a wall, causing significant damage.

Ingle was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m., police said.

She was booked into the Monroe County Jail on preliminary charges of intimidation, a Level 5 felony, domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor.

Under Indiana law, criminal charges are accusations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
