Clean-up planned along Tomhicken Road later this month

ROCK GLEN – A cleanup is set to take place later this week in part of our area and you can help.

The nonprofit Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR) will conduct the cleanup along Tomhicken Road in Black Creek Township on Saturday, April 18 from 10am to 2pm.

Participants are encouraged to meet at the township building at 1980 Tomhicken Road.

All volunteers must sign a liability waiver and be aware of hazards including ticks, uneven terrain, broken glass, and other debris. Any volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers will be provided with work gloves, safety vests and trash bags.

Also assisting are the Friends of the Nescopeck, Black Creek Township and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.

This cleanup is also made possible thanks to The Amazon Northeastern Pennsylvania Community Fund, supported by Amazon. It recently awarded a $10,000 grant to EPCAMR for a community-improvement initiative called the Remove Illegal Dumpsites (RID) Project.

Illegal dumpsites, EPCAMR says, not only spoil the scenery but also pose a threat to people’s health and safety. Vehicle tires, electronic equipment and other discarded materials can leach pollutants into the soil and water.

Rubber tires can harbor disease-carrying insects, mice and other vermin, contributing to the spread of sickness such as West Nile virus.
