ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) — Residents in northern Indiana are raising concerns about higher utility bills, saying recent increases are putting pressure on household budgets.

Dozens of customers shared their experiences during a public listening session hosted by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds.

Many attendees said their bills from NIPSCO have increased significantly, with some reporting their monthly costs have doubled. According to WSBT, several customers said they are struggling to understand why charges are rising, particularly when it comes to delivery fees.

State Senator Blake Doriot told attendees his own household bill increased from about $290 to $450, reflecting the broader concerns shared by residents.

Customers at the meeting called for clearer explanations and urged leaders to consider affordability as energy costs continue to climb.

Officials with the regulatory commission said they do not directly control delivery charges. Meanwhile, NIPSCO representatives have said the company does not independently set rates and must go through a state approval process.

The session marked the third in a series of public meetings aimed at gathering feedback from customers across the region.
