
Rootstock has announced the acquisition of Ascent Solutions (“Ascent”), the vendor behind another Salesforce native ERP solution. Rootstock is backed by Gryphon Investors, a leading middle-market private investment firm that invested in Rootstock in 2022. The acquisition seems reminiscent of Kenandy, another Salesforce-native ERP vendor, which it acquired in 2018.Founded in 2005 (source Tracxn) by Shaun McInerney, President & CEO (whose LinkedIn indicates Ascent was founded in 1998). The firm brings over two decades of Salesforce-native development experience and serves over 100 customers (as listed on its website). Rootstock believes the acquisition will be complementary to its technology stack. And enhance the Rootstock offering for manufacturers and distributors, particularly in sales and service.

What is Rootstock acquiring
Ascent lists several solutions within its portfolio:
- Ascent ERP: Delivers a complete view into the lifecycle of an order from inception to delivery. Helps organisations control inventory, warehouses, procurement, production, sales, returns, and services.
- Ascent Rental: Is the first native Salesforce application to efficiently manage rental, loaner and trial equipment orders, as well as event rentals.
- Ascent (IM) Inventory Management: Empowers inventory management for healthcare, medical devices, laboratory and pharma.
- Ascent (OM) Order Management: Extends the Salesforce standard order entry interface, products, and price books to add new fields & functionality to assist with order management and costing.
- Ascent Inventory and Order Management: (IOM) enables purchasing, operations, warehouse, sales, service, and finance teams to take control of their inventory and order management, replenishment, warehouse mobility, and returns.
- Ascent Label Anything: Create any size label, with any barcode symbology from any standard SFDC object or any custom object, including managed packages. Ascent Label Anything is a standalone app that can be part of any solution with or without any other Ascent applications.
What isn’t clear is how, or when, Rootstock will add the functionality that Ascent has built into its own platform. However, since both applications are Salesforce-native, both teams will have the expertise to complete the integration, if possible.
Ascent brings expertise and code that can address challenges facing many product companies across fulfilment, service, and post-sale operations. While organisations can purchase separate solutions, the enhanced Rootstock aims to offer a single, Salesforce-native solution that provides a complete end-to-end solution. Ascent will bring greater expertise into Rootsock for the mid-office and post-sale processes.
Rootstock should see enhancements that enable better connections among sales, service, and finance, in ways that support real-world operational improvements.

Enterprise Times: What does this mean?
Is this an exit by McInerney? At the moment, the news is just breaking. Enterprise Times has also asked Rootstock some further questions about the announcement, and another article may follow this one if enough responses are received.
There are several unanswered questions in the release. What happens to Ascent’s employees, customers and partners as a result of this acquisition? Like Kenandy before it, will the plan be to merge the functionality and slowly sunset Ascent over time? What is Gryphon Investors’ view? And did Salesforce have a hand in making this deal happen?
Rootstock already works closely with Sales and leverages Salesforce products, including Agentforce Sales, Agentforce Service, and Agentforce Manufacturing. With the shared data model, the combination of Rootstock and Ascent will certainly deliver benefits for Rootstock customers. For Salesforce, it loses another ERP vendor from its ecosystem. It will be interesting to see what other technology expertise Rootstock gains as a result of this acquisition.
