With VertiGIS Studio, the Luxembourg-based company is creating a central, user-friendly platform that gives over 1,000 employees quick access to relevant data.

CFL is Luxembourg’s largest private employer with more than 5,000 employees. As a central pillar of the national mobility strategy, CFL operates passenger and freight transport as well as infrastructure services, sustainably shaping the country’s mobility. The star-shaped rail network covers around 300 km with approximately 100 operating locations.
In addition to passenger transport (with international connections to Belgium, France, and Germany), CFL also operates freight transport, an intermodal terminal, and a large logistics centre. Since the introduction of free public transport, efficiency, digital solutions, and sustainability have been at the heart of the company’s strategy.

With CFL previously using VertiGIS WebOffice, it has worked closely with VertiGIS to migrate to VertiGIS Studio. With all testing and internal training complete, this will deliver user-friendly, centralised access to crucial infrastructure data, without compromising functionality. Meanwhile, CFL has implemented a brand-new server structure that delivers the required stability for VertiGIS’ high-performance VertiGIS Studio tool.

Centralising information from specialist systems

The migration to VertiGIS Studio removes the difficulty of managing large projects. CFL is now able to easily access centralised information from specialist systems within smaller projects. This can include CAD, planning, and surveying data. Multiple departments can now efficiently implement their own data – from environmental information to safety-critical applications such as a fire department access map – for quick and efficient access in an emergency.

Using VertiGIS Studio’s powerful search and filter functions, employees can easily search maps to quickly access specialist data. The solution includes the ability to locate assets at any kilometre point a particularly useful feature. This makes everyday tasks noticeably easier for CFL employees.

The integration of VertiGIS Studio with Esri solutions opens up additional possibilities, whilst ensuring the future viability of the solution. Going forward, CFL is also planning mobile solutions to provide optimal coverage even in areas with poor network coverage.

Enterprise Times: What this means for businesses

GIS is now considered a mainstream enterprise technology. While it was once a niche “map room” specialism, it has evolved into a foundational platform for global decision-making across almost every major industry. Similar to other technologies, AI is having a major impact on GIS. While AI is not expected to replace GIS experts but rather to automate repetitive manual tasks like digitising and data cleaning. “Co-pilots” are being used to speed up spatial analysis, allowing professionals to focus on more strategic, high-level thinking.

VertiGIS Studio simplifies the management of both large and small projects. The solution integrates specialist systems, such as CAD, planning, and surveying data, into a unified interface. This allows multiple departments to efficiently contribute and retrieve data, supporting applications ranging from environmental monitoring to emergency response, like fire department access maps. The platform’s advanced search and filter functions further supports employees to locate assets and access specialist information swiftly. This makes day-to-day tasks more straightforward and reducing response times in critical situations.

VertiGIS Studio optimises workflows for more than 1,000 users by enhancing stability, efficiency, and overall performance. CFL’s plans to extend mobile access underscore the platform’s role in supporting field operations, even in areas with limited connectivity. Overall, VertiGIS Studio is central to CFL’s commitment to efficiency, digital innovation, and sustainability. The platform underpins its role as a key player in Luxembourg’s national mobility strategy.
