The spot sits inside a Tishman Speyer-owned mixed-use tower going up near Exchange Place. Fifty-eight stories tall. More than 1,000 homes will fill the building, and 60,000 square feet of ground-floor retail will line the base, according to The Digest Online.
This will be the second Hudson County shop for the California-based grocer. They opened one in Hoboken back in 2016.
Whispers about the lease started in October 2025 when the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District dropped hints. The Jersey City Times reported later that the chain would take space at 50-55 Hudson St., guessing at a 2027 launch.
About half a mile away, a Whole Foods Market opened two years ago. ShopRite and BJ’s Wholesale Club also serve shoppers in the area.
The Exchange Place PATH station and Exchange Place Light Rail stop both sit close by. Riders can reach Lower Manhattan, Midtown, and other parts of Hudson County from either one.
Developers filed paperwork in 2024 asking to boost retail parking from 31 spaces to 62 while cutting residential spots. That shift pointed to a high-volume seller eyeing the space.
The chain started in 1967 and now runs more than 630 shops across the United States. Last year they launched close to 30 stores. This year they expect to add at least a dozen sites nationwide.
In New Jersey, the banner has 20 shops right now. West Orange and Montvale will get new ones soon.
A Washington Street idea popped up in 2019 but died on the vine. Jersey City residents have driven to Hoboken for the closest store since it opened a decade ago.
Work on 55 Hudson St. should wrap later this year. The retail buildout and store launch will come after, hitting that 2027 window the Jersey City Times mentioned.
